Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah bin Hj Mohd Nawawi hails from the town of Kuala Kangsar, Perak on 2 November 1960. After completing his secondary education, he was selected to attend Officer Cadet training at the renowned Officer Cadet School, Portsea, Australia. He was then commissioned into the Royal Malay Regiment (RMR) on 11 December 1981.

Throughout his illustrious career, Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah has held various important command, staff and instructor appointments within the Malaysian Army. Apart from that, he was directly involved in fighting communist insurgents at the Malaysian - Thai Border until the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) laid down their arms on 2 December 1989. Subsequently, Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah was made Commanding Officer of the Second RMR Battalion in 1995. This marked a significant turning point in his career as he was later entrusted with key senior command appointments in the subsequent years, including the 11th Infantry Brigade Commander in 2005, the 3rd Infantry Division Commander in 2007, the Army Field Commander in 2009 and the Deputy Chief of Army in 2011. On 3 September 2018, he was appointed as the Chief of Army.

Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah has also held numerous important staff appointments in the Malaysian Army Headquarters, namely as Staff Officer 1 Administration, Colonel Training, and Assistant Chief of Staff Operations and Training. He also used to serve at the 11th Infantry Brigade Headquarters as Chief of Staff. To date, he remains being the only infantry officer assigned as the Director of Education of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), that was from 1 April 2001 until 17 April 2003. During that tenure, he was involved in amending the Armed Forces Education Policy to enable military personnel attending various levels of higher education with full funding, as well as introducing partnership with the Malaysian Open University for distance learning programmes. He was also instrumental in setting up the MAF Academic and Higher Education Loan Scheme and the Armed Forces Childrens’ Academic Loan Scheme, which are enjoyed by both serving personnel and their children.

Meanwhile, Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah served as instructor at the Officer Cadet School, Port Dickson in 1986, and as Directing Staff at the Malaysian Army Combat Training Centre, Johore in 1993.

As part of his career development, Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah has attended various professional courses locally and abroad, such as at the Australian Infantry Centre, Singleton; US Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia; Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College; and US Army War College (USAWC). He obtains a Diploma in Training and Development from Leicester University, a Master in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Lancaster University, and a Master in Strategic Studies from the USAWC. He graduated from the MAF Defence College in 2000, emerging as the Best Student for Academic, hence earned the College Board of Governors Award. In addition, he attended the Senior Executives in National and International Security Course at the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School, US in 2013.

Gen Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Hasbullah is married to Datin Seri Noor Akmar binti Yaacob, and the couple is blessed with three children. His favourite pastimes include reading, shooting and playing golf.
