Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah was born on 1 November 1963 in Segamat, Johor. He received his secondary education at Dato’ Bentara Dalam Secondary School and Segamat High School, Johor Darul Takzim. He joined the Malaysian Army on 1 December 1981 and completed his one year military training as an Officer Cadet at Officer Cadets School, Port Dickson. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Royal Malay Regiment (RMR) on 18 December 1982.

Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah has held numerous essential command, staff and instructor appointments throughout his distinguished 37 years of service. Being as an Infantry Officer, he has exercised his early command stage, starting as a Platoon Commander of the 6th RMR Battalion from 1983 until 1986. He stepped forward to the next level in his command appointment as an Officer-in-Command of the 9th RMR Battalion (Para) since 1997 until 1998 and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of the 17th RMR Battalion (Para) from 2003 until 2004. In regards with his commitment and dedication, Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah was later appointed with several key command appointments, including 10th Brigade (Para) Deputy Commander from 2008 until 2010, 3rd Infantry Brigade Commander in 2011 and 2012, 30th Infantry Brigade Commander from 2013 until 2014, 10th Brigade (Para) Commander from 2015 until 2016 and 3rd Infantry Division Commander since 2016 until 2018. On 19 September 2018, he has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and entrusted as the 24th Deputy Chief of Army.

On the staff appointments, Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah has also held multifarious primary staff assignments, particularly as Staff Officer 2 Operation of 10th Brigade (Para) Headquarters in 2000 and 2001, Military Assistant to Army Field Commander from 2001 until 2002, Staff Officer 1 Human Resource of Human Resources Branch from 2004 until 2005, Staff Officer 1 Infantry of Infantry Directorate in 2007, Director Secretariat of Army Headquarters from 2010 until 2011 and Director General Defence Planning and Development of Army Headquarters from 2014 until 2015. In addition, he was also served as the Assistant Chief of Staff Defence Operations and Training Division of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Headquarters in 2018. Throughout his service, Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah was also served as an instructor, locally and abroad. He was appointed as an instructor at the Malaysian Army Combat Training Centre (PULADA), Ulu Tiram, Johor, from 1990 until 1994. Based on his excellent performances, he was selected for the Army Officer Exchange Program and had served as an instructor at the Infantry School in Waiouru, New Zealand, for two years, from 1995 until 1996.

Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah has had wide range of experiences in both operations and training fields. He involved in the operations against the Communist Terrorist along the Malaysia - Thailand border between 1983 until 1996, particularly in OP KOTA FOXTROT/ECHO and OP INDERA in Pahang. He had a chance to serve under the United Nations mission as a Military Observer in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1993. He was also named as the Military Operations Commander under The National Blue Ocean Strategy involving security cooperation between the MAF and the Royal Malaysian Police during the ASEAN SUMMIT 2015. From the joint and combined training aspects, he was appointed as the Exercise Planning Staff for Exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) between the MAF and the USMC, and Exercise LATGABMA MALINDO DARSASA between the Malaysian Army and the Indonesian Army, in 2000 and 2001. He once again had been selected as the Exercise Director for Exercise CARAT and Exercise LAND MALPHI between the Malaysian Army and the Philippine Army in 2012.

Meanwhile, along his career journey, Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah has remarkable achievements in academic field. He has acquired Master of Defence Studies from the University of Canberra, Australia; Master of Social Sciences in Defence Studies from the National University of Malaysia; and Master of Science in National Security and War Studies from the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan. He had also attended numerous prestigious local and overseas courses, namely RF Anti-Armoured Course in New Zealand (1987); Company Commander Course at the PULADA (1990); Advanced Company Commander Course at the School of Infantry, Singleton, Australia (1991); All Arms Tactics Course at the PULADA (1997); Australian Army Command and Staff Course at Fort Queenscliff, Australia (1999); Malaysian Armed Forces Defence Course in Kuala Lumpur (2006); Advanced Security Cooperation Course at the Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Hawaii, United States of America (2009); National Security and War Course at the National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan (2012); and High Defence Studies Course for Senior Officers Asia Pacific in Madrid, Spain (2015).

Lieutenant General Dato’ Hasagaya bin Abdullah is married to Datin Norhanita binti A. Hamid and blessed with five children. His favourite activities during leisure time are reading and recreation.
