GENERAL TAN SRI DATO' SERI PANGLIMA HJ ZULKIFLI BIN HJ ZAINAL ABIDIN
General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Panglima Hj Zulkifli was born in Perak on 30 November 1958. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 30 January 1978 into the Royal Malay Regiment. His distinguished army career culminated with his appointment as Chief of Army on 15 June 2011.
He holds a Master in Management from the Asian Institute of Management, Manila, Philippines. Additionally, he also obtained an Advanced Diploma in Business and Management (Distinction) from Swansea Institute of Higher Education, University of Wales as well as a Graduate Diploma from the Royal College of Defence Studies (Imperial Defence College), London. He had also attended various academic and military course abroad including in New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
He has held various staff, command and training appointments at various levels of command in the Army and Armed Forces, including as the Senior Staff Officer to the Chief of Defence Force in 2001. He also has rich academic experiences, having been appointed as Vice Chancellor of the National Defence University of Malaysia from September 2008 to 19 May 2010. He attended the Senior Development Programme at John F. Kennedy School of Government, Haverd University, Massachusetts in 2010. He is also an Adjunct Professor to the Centre of Business Innovation and Technopreneurhip, University of Malaysia Perlis since 2010.
His military training experience is also very extensive. He was actively involved in counter insurgency operations during the Communist Insurgency which ended in 1989. He was seconded to the New Zealand Army as a teaching staff at Army Training Group and Senior Instructor at New Zealand Army Infantry School from 1986 to 1988, where he was responsible in teaching officers and personnel of the New Zealand Army and other Commonweallth countries in weapons, tactics and counter insurgency warfare. He was an Training Centre from 1992 to 1993. He was also the Commandant of the Army Recruit Training Centre from 2002 to 2004 where he was responsible in training approximately 12,000 army recruits per year
In recongnition of his valur and services to the nation, he has been awarded several honourary medals. He was bestowed with the title Tan Sri after receiving Darjah Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM)from HM Yang DiPertuan Agong in 2012. He also possesses the title Dato’ Seri from his Darjah Dato’ Seri Panglima Taming Sari (SPTS)
He has a very broad area of interest. In Management, his interests are in Defence, Training and Human Resources Management. In Defence and Security Studies he has a preference for Total Defence, Counter Insurgency and Terrorism. He is also and avid reader of Leadership and Development subjects.
He is married to Puan Sri Hajjah Rusnah binti Haji A. Rahman. Their marriage has been blessed with two daughters and two sons. In his free time, he likes to take care of his orchard as well as fishing, hunting and enjoying a few rounds of golf.
